At 1600, the Bolshevik flotilla resumed firing from the bend in the river and M.27 and M.33 boldly steamed forward to Seltso, the extent of the cleared minefield, to take the enemy on. The monitors came under a maelstrom of fire from three directions, from artillery at Selmenga on the eastern bank and Seltso on the western bank in addition to the Bolshevik gunboats to the front.At 1640, M.33 was struck by a 5.9 inch shell amidships on the starboard side below the waterline, causing the monitor to list badly and begin to sink. An attempt to steam out of range failed when the added draught from the list caused the monitor to ground on a submerged sand bar directly under the steep riverbank from which the enemy machine gunners had peppered the ship earlier in the day.Stuck fast, broadside to the enemy, the crew of M.33 could do little more than watch as enemy shells began falling closer and closer as the Bolshevik gunners corrected their range. One crew member recorded that the following 10 minutes were, ‘excessively unpleasant.’
